How much weight can a 30-yard dumpster hold before overage?

The 30-yard dumpster includes 4 tons, which is 8,000 lb. Construction loads mix light packaging with heavy drywall and lumber. Drywall scrap is dense, so a 30-yard filled mostly with drywall can pass 4 tons. Mixed framing and packaging waste usually fills the box before it reaches the weight included.

Worked example: A remodel crew fills the 30-yard with drywall, lumber and cabinets. The scale ticket shows 9,100 lb net. The 30-yard includes 8,000 lb, so you pay for 1,100 lb: 0.55 ton × $75 = $41.25.

Check your own shingle bundle label or material weight. How weight is billed and proven.

Will a 30-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?

The 30-yard dumpster sits on a footprint of about 22 by 8 feet. Plan for a clear, level spot at least 25 feet long and 10 feet wide, plus a straight approach for the truck of roughly 60 feet and about 23 feet of overhead clearance from wires and branches. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.

  • Driveway placement on private property needs no city permit in most cases. Street placement can. See placement and permits.
  • Keep it off septic lids, sprinkler heads, soft yard and concrete poured in the last few weeks.
  • Move cars and open gates before the truck arrives. A blocked drop is a $125 dry-run fee.

Approach length and overhead clearance are typical roll-off truck figures; the driver confirms on site.

Is a 30-yard too small or too big for my job?

Drop to the 20-yard when the walls of a 30-yard won't be needed: same footprint, 4-ft walls, 3 tons, lower base price. Step up to the 40-yard for major demolition or large commercial jobs; it is 2 feet taller and holds 5 to 6 tons. If one 30-yard fills before the job ends, book a swap, priced as a new rental.

Guessing too small costs a second haul, priced as a new rental. Guessing too big costs only the difference in base price. When torn between two sizes, the larger one is usually cheaper overall. Compare: 20-yard dumpster · 40-yard dumpster · all sizes

What will my 30-yard bill include?

Your 30-yard includes 4 tons (8,000 lb) and 7 days. Weight over that is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound from the certified landfill scale ticket, which comes with your final invoice 3 to 5 business days after pickup. If the ticket shows 500 lb over 8,000 lb, you pay 0.25 ton × $75 = $18.75.

  • Extra days: $25 each
  • Mattress, tire or Freon appliance: $50 each
  • Blocked drop or overfill: $125 dry run

What can't go in the dumpster?

Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in any Hayes Bros dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold Freon (fridges, freezers, window AC units) can go in for $50 each, because the disposal site handles them separately. Most household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, shingles and yard debris are fine.

Straight answers

30-yard dumpster questions

How big is a 30-yard dumpster?

22 ft long, 8 ft wide and 6 ft high on the outside. It holds 30 cubic yards, about 10 to 15 pickup loads.

Can a 30-yard dumpster take concrete?

No. Concrete, dirt, brick and rock are limited to our 10 and 15-yard dumpsters, filled halfway. A 30-yard of concrete could weigh more than 20 tons.

How do I get a fresh dumpster when the 30-yard is full?

Call for a swap. We haul the full container and drop an empty one in the same trip. A swap is priced as a new rental, so the new container starts with its own 7 days and 4 tons.

Do contractors need to be on site for delivery?

No. If the drop zone is clear and marked, the driver can place the dumpster without anyone there. The driver calls or texts 20 to 30 minutes ahead.
