How Dumpster Weight Is Billed
Every load is weighed on a certified landfill scale. You see the ticket, you pay only for the exact pounds over your included tons, and the math is below.
How is dumpster weight billed?
Dumpster weight is billed from the landfill scale. The loaded truck is weighed in (gross), weighed empty after dumping (tare), and the difference is your net weight. If net weight is over your size's included tons, Hayes Bros bills $75 per ton for the extra, by the exact pound.
| Line on the scale ticket | What it means |
|---|---|
| Gross | Truck plus your full dumpster, weighed on arrival |
| Tare | The same truck and empty container after dumping |
| Net | Gross minus tare: the weight of your debris |
| Date, time, ticket no. | Ties the ticket to your pickup |
How much weight is included with each dumpster?
The 10-yard includes 2 tons (4,000 lb), the 15-yard 2.5 tons (5,000 lb), the 20-yard 3 tons (6,000 lb) and the 30-yard 4 tons (8,000 lb). One ton is 2,000 lb. Weight over that is pro-rated at $75 per ton, which is $3.75 per 100 lb.
| Size | Outside dimensions | Pickup loads | Included weight | Rental | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12 ft L × 8 ft W × 3.5 ft H | about 3 to 5 | 2 tons (4,000 lb) | 7 days | Concrete, dirt or brick (half full), a small bathroom remodel, a one-room cleanout |
| 15-yard | 16 ft L × 7.5 ft W × 4.5 ft H | about 5 to 7 | 2.5 tons (5,000 lb) | 7 days | Garage cleanouts, small roof replacements, flooring or deck removal |
| 20-yard | 22 ft L × 8 ft W × 4 ft H | about 7 to 10 | 3 tons (6,000 lb) | 7 days | Whole-house decluttering, kitchen remodels, most single-layer roofs |
| 30-yard | 22 ft L × 8 ft W × 6 ft H | about 10 to 15 | 4 tons (8,000 lb) | 7 days | New construction, home additions, large remodels and big cleanouts |
| 40-yard | 22 ft L × 7.5 ft W × 8 ft H | about 12 to 16 | Holds 5–6 tons; included tons on your quote | 7 days | Major demolition, new construction and large commercial projects |
Pickup loads assume an 8-ft truck bed loaded level, about 2 to 3 cubic yards each. Weight over the included tons is billed at $75 per ton, by the exact pound. How weight is billed.
Which materials go over the weight limit fastest?
Concrete, dirt, brick, rock, tile and roofing shingles hit the weight limit long before the dumpster looks full. Normal concrete weighs roughly 2 tons per solid cubic yard. That is why heavy debris goes only in 10 and 15-yard dumpsters, loaded no higher than halfway.
| Material | Rough weight | Rule at Hayes Bros |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete (solid) | About 4,000 lb per cubic yard | 10 or 15-yard only, half full |
| Dirt, caliche, sand | Roughly 2,000 to 3,000 lb per cubic yard, more when wet | 10 or 15-yard only, half full |
| Brick, block, rock | Heavy, similar to concrete | 10 or 15-yard only, half full |
| Asphalt shingles | 60 to 80 lb per bundle, 3 bundles per square (check your label) | Any size; do the square math |
| Drywall scrap | Dense when stacked | Any size; watch weight in a 30-yard |
| Household junk, furniture | Light; fills by volume first | Any size |
Rough figures for planning; your scale ticket is the final word. Shingle weight: use the bundle label from your manufacturer.
What happens if my dumpster is overweight?
An overweight dumpster is still hauled as long as the load is level with the rim and legal for the road. You pay $75 per ton only for the pounds over your included weight, shown on the scale ticket attached to your final invoice. A dumpster too heavy to lift safely has to be lightened first.
Example: your 15-yard includes 5,000 lb. The ticket shows 5,900 lb net. 900 lb ÷ 2,000 = 0.45 ton × $75 = $33.75.
- Cover open loads before rain. Wet debris weighs more, and you pay for the water.
- Keep heavy debris out of the 20 and 30-yard.
- Separate clean concrete or dirt for clean-fill pricing.
When will I see the scale ticket and final bill?
The final invoice is emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup, once the landfill processes the disposal log. A digital copy of the certified landfill scale ticket is attached, so you can match the net weight to the charge yourself.

Weight and overage questions
How much does a ton over cost?
$75 per ton, pro-rated by the pound. 500 lb over is $18.75; 1,000 lb over is $37.50.
Do you round up to the next ton?
No. Overage is charged by the exact pound shown on the landfill's digital weight ticket.
How can I estimate my load's weight before pickup?
Count heavy materials: shingle squares × the bundle weight × 3, or cubic yards of concrete × about 4,000 lb. Light household junk rarely reaches the included weight.
Can I see proof of my dumpster's weight?
A copy of the certified landfill scale ticket is attached to every final invoice, showing gross, tare and net weight.
Why are concrete and dirt limited to half full?
Texas roads have legal weight limits for trucks. A full 10 or 15-yard of concrete or dirt would be far over them, so heavy loads stop halfway up the walls.
