What fits in a 40-yard dumpster?

A 40-yard dumpster holds 40 cubic yards, about 12 to 16 pickup-truck loads, and 5 to 6 tons of debris. It is built for major demolition, new construction and large commercial projects. The 40-yard has 8-foot walls, so plan loading from a ramp, a chute or equipment.

Typical 40-yard jobs

  • Interior demolition of a commercial space or a full house gut
  • Framing, drywall and packaging waste across a large new build
  • A large commercial cleanout: shelving, fixtures, furniture and pallets
  • Big roofs with lightweight materials (heavy shingles fill the tons first)

How much weight can a 40-yard dumpster hold before overage?

The 40-yard dumpster holds 5 to 6 tons, and your quote states the tons included. Volume fills before weight on most 40-yard jobs, because demolition and construction debris is bulky. Drywall, plaster and wet lumber are the dense materials that push a 40-yard toward its 5 to 6 ton capacity. Concrete, dirt and brick never go in a 40-yard.

Worked example: A demolition crew fills the 40-yard with framing, drywall and fixtures. The scale ticket shows the net weight, and your quote states the tons included for the 40-yard; weight over that is billed at $75 per ton, by the exact pound.

Check your own shingle bundle label or material weight. How weight is billed and proven.

Will a 40-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?

The 40-yard dumpster sits on a footprint of about 22 by 7.5 feet. Plan for a clear, level spot at least 25 feet long and 10 feet wide, plus a straight approach for the truck of roughly 60 feet and about 23 feet of overhead clearance from wires and branches. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.

  • Driveway placement on private property needs no city permit in most cases. Street placement can. See placement and permits.
  • Keep it off septic lids, sprinkler heads, soft yard and concrete poured in the last few weeks.
  • Move cars and open gates before the truck arrives. A blocked drop is a $125 dry-run fee.

Approach length and overhead clearance are typical roll-off truck figures; the driver confirms on site.

Is a 40-yard too small or too big for my job?

Drop to the 30-yard when the debris fits under 6-foot walls; it has a similar footprint and a lower base price. When a 40-yard fills before the job ends, book a swap: we haul the full one and drop an empty one, priced as a new rental.

Guessing too small costs a second haul, priced as a new rental. Guessing too big costs only the difference in base price. When torn between two sizes, the larger one is usually cheaper overall. Compare: 30-yard dumpster · all sizes

What will my 40-yard bill include?

Your 40-yard holds 5 to 6 tons; the tons included and 7 days are stated on your quote. Every 500 lb over the included weight costs $18.75.

  • Extra days: $25 each
  • Mattress, tire or Freon appliance: $50 each
  • Blocked drop or overfill: $125 dry run

What can't go in the dumpster?

Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in any Hayes Bros dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold Freon (fridges, freezers, window AC units) can go in for $50 each, because the disposal site handles them separately. Most household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, shingles and yard debris are fine.
