What size dumpster do I need for concrete or dirt?

Concrete and dirt go only in a 10 or 15-yard dumpster, loaded no higher than halfway up the walls. Weight runs out before space does: the 10-yard includes 2 tons, about one solid cubic yard of concrete, and the 15-yard 2.5 tons. Extra weight is $75 per ton by the pound.

SizeFill lineIncluded weightGood for
10-yardAbout 1.75 ft (half of 3.5 ft)2 tonsA walkway, small patio or short trench
15-yardAbout 2.25 ft (half of 4.5 ft)2.5 tonsA larger patio, a driveway section, landscape grading

How much does broken concrete weigh?

Solid concrete weighs about 4,000 lb (2 tons) per cubic yard. A slab's volume is length × width × thickness. A 10 × 10 ft patio, 4 inches thick, is 33 cubic feet, about 1.2 cubic yards, or roughly 4,900 lb. Broken pieces take more room because of air gaps.

Worked example: that 10 × 10 ft patio (about 4,900 lb) in a 15-yard (5,000 lb included) has no overage. In a 10-yard (4,000 lb included) you pay for about 900 lb: 0.45 ton × $75 = $33.75.

What is a clean load, and why does it matter?

A clean load is one material only: concrete only, or dirt only, with no trash, wood or mixed debris. Clean loads qualify for special clean-fill pricing because they can be processed separately. Mixed heavy loads are billed at standard rates.

  • Rebar and wire mesh in concrete: ask when you book.
  • Caliche and sandy soil count as dirt.
  • Roots, sod and stumps make it a mixed load.

What will my concrete and dirt dumpster bill include?

Every concrete and dirt dumpster rental includes 7 days and a set weight by dumpster size. Weight over that is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound from the certified landfill scale ticket, which comes with your final invoice 3 to 5 business days after pickup. Every 500 lb over the included weight costs $18.75.

  • Extra days: $25 each
  • Mattress, tire or Freon appliance: $50 each
  • Blocked drop or overfill: $125 dry run

Every fee, explained · how the scale ticket works

What can't go in the dumpster?

Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in any Hayes Bros dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold Freon (fridges, freezers, window AC units) can go in for $50 each, because the disposal site handles them separately. Most household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, shingles and yard debris are fine.

Straight answers

Concrete and dirt dumpster questions

Can I fill a dumpster to the top with dirt?

No. Dirt, concrete, brick and rock stop halfway up the walls of a 10 or 15-yard. A full box would be over legal road weight.

Can concrete go in a 20-yard dumpster?

No. Heavy debris is limited to the 10 and 15-yard. Order a second small dumpster for concrete if you also need a 20-yard for general debris.

Does caliche count as dirt?

Caliche, sand and topsoil are all heavy debris: 10 or 15-yard only, half full. Unmixed caliche can qualify as a clean load.

Will a concrete dumpster crack my driveway?

Boards go under the rails on every drop to spread the load. Heavy loads still stress thin or new slabs, so place it on the thickest section.
