What size dumpster do contractors use for new construction?
Most new homes and additions use a 30-yard dumpster, which includes 4 tons and holds 10 to 15 pickup loads of framing, drywall and packaging waste. A 20-yard suits small additions and finish-outs. Concrete, block and dirt go in a separate 10 or 15-yard.
| Job | Dumpster | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New single-family home, framing to trim | 30-yard | Plan on swaps through the build |
| Home addition or garage | 20-yard or 30-yard | Depends on demo plus new build |
| Commercial interior finish-out | 30-yard | Drywall-heavy loads approach 4 tons |
| Major demolition or large commercial build | 40-yard | 40 cubic yards; holds 5 to 6 tons |
| Foundation or flatwork demo | 10-yard or 15-yard | Half full; clean loads get clean-fill pricing |
How do dumpster swaps work on a job site?
A swap means we haul your full dumpster and drop an empty one in the same visit. Call when the container is close to full; a swap is priced as a new rental, so each container gets its own 7 days and included tons. Book by 3:00 PM for a next-day swap.

What rules apply to construction debris?
Federal rules apply on construction and demolition sites. OSHA requires an enclosed chute when debris is dropped more than 20 feet outside the exterior walls. EPA rules require an asbestos inspection before demolition or renovation of many buildings, and lead-safe practices for paid work in homes built before 1978.
| Topic | Rule | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Debris chutes | Enclosed chute for drops over 20 ft outside exterior walls | OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) |
| Asbestos | Inspection and, above thresholds, advance notice before demolition or renovation | EPA 40 CFR 61.145 |
| Lead paint | Lead-safe work practices for paid renovators in pre-1978 homes | EPA RRP Rule |
| Secured loads | Loose loads must be secured on Texas roads; no debris above the rim | Tex. Transp. Code ch. 725 |

Can you drop a dumpster when nobody is on site?
The driver can place the dumpster with nobody on site, as long as the drop zone is clear and marked. The driver calls or texts 20 to 30 minutes before arrival to confirm placement. Locked gates and parked equipment cause dry runs, which are $125.

What will my construction dumpster bill include?
Every construction dumpster rental includes 7 days and a set weight by dumpster size. Weight over that is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound from the certified landfill scale ticket, which comes with your final invoice 3 to 5 business days after pickup. Every 500 lb over the included weight costs $18.75.
- Extra days: $25 each
- Mattress, tire or Freon appliance: $50 each
- Blocked drop or overfill: $125 dry run
What can't go in the dumpster?
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in any Hayes Bros dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold Freon (fridges, freezers, window AC units) can go in for $50 each, because the disposal site handles them separately. Most household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, shingles and yard debris are fine.
