What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?
Most single-layer asphalt roofs up to about 25 squares fit a 20-yard dumpster within its 3 tons. Roofs up to about 20 squares fit a 15-yard, and larger roofs or two layers need a 30-yard. The math assumes 80-lb bundles and 3 bundles per square; check your shingle label.

How much does a roof's worth of shingles weigh?
One roof square of asphalt shingles weighs about 180 to 240 lb per layer, because bundles commonly weigh 60 to 80 lb and a square takes 3 bundles. Multiply squares by that weight to estimate the load. A 25-square roof with 80-lb bundles is 6,000 lb, exactly 3 tons.
Worked example: 30 squares × 3 bundles × 75 lb = 6,750 lb. In a 20-yard (6,000 lb included) you pay for 750 lb: 0.375 ton × $75 = $28.13. In a 30-yard (8,000 lb included) you pay no overage.
Where should the roofing dumpster go?
Place the roofing dumpster as close to the drip edge as the truck allows, so the crew can drop shingles straight in. Keep it at least a few feet off the wall, clear of AC units and gas meters. The truck needs a straight approach of about 60 feet and roughly 23 feet of overhead clearance.

What will my roofing dumpster bill include?
Every roofing dumpster rental includes 7 days and a set weight by dumpster size. Weight over that is $75 per ton, billed by the exact pound from the certified landfill scale ticket, which comes with your final invoice 3 to 5 business days after pickup. Every 500 lb over the included weight costs $18.75.

What can't go in the dumpster?
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in any Hayes Bros dumpster. Mattresses, tires and appliances that hold Freon (fridges, freezers, window AC units) can go in for $50 each, because the disposal site handles them separately. Most household junk, furniture, wood, drywall, shingles and yard debris are fine.
